San Pedro de Alcantara

The coastal town of San Pedro de Alcantara is ideally positioned; just 10 kilometers west of glamorous Marbella, and just a few minutes drive from the peace and beauty of the Sierra de Ronda mountain range.

San Pedro has been around since the 1860's, though then an agricultural community growing various produce, including sugar cane. Though agriculture is still important, since the 1970's the town has thrived increasingly on tourism. This has brought about landscaping drives and efforts made towards good town planning. The result is a clean and tidy town with plenty of parks, squares and gardens. Commercial enterprises such as retail outlets, cafes, restaurants, hotels, and golf courses have also become established.

Most visitors to the town head for the central plaza, or the seafront. The plaza is in the oldest part of town, features its own church, and is surrounded by a maze of narrow streets. Here you will find many shops selling a variety of wares, alongside cafes, bars, and restaurants. From the centre you can walk to the beachfront along the Avenida del Marques del Duero (an attractive palm fringed street), which connects with the towns (relatively new) promenade. There are a few notable beach clubs here serving food and drinks into the early hours.

San Pedro also plays host to its share of historical attractions; its Paleochristian Basilica Church and Necropolis can be found overlooking the sea, while the ancient Roman baths "Las Bovedas" can be found via the beach in the direction of Guadalmina.

The beachfront in San Pedro de Alcantara stretches for 5 kilometres and has been awarded the European blue flag. Well maintained, clean, and with good quality chiringuitos (beach front cafes) it is well worth a visit.

In more recent times San Pedro has attracted interest from residential tourists. With house prices often considerably cheaper than those of its coastal neighbours Marbella and Puerto Banus; San Pedro is still close enough to sample the high life, but without the price tag or (in the summer months) as many crowds.

San Pedro also benefits by the quantity of high quality golf courses near its borders. In fact the Costa del Sol boasts perhaps the highest concentration of high quality golf courses in Europe, with many golfing professionals using the Costa as their winter training ground.

Finally its mild weather makes it an ideal destination for holiday makers all year round. The coastline in this part of Spain is sheltered by hills and high mountains; thus limiting rainfall, and as a result the surrounding areas enjoy sunshine for in excess of 320 days per year.
