Guardamar Festivals (Fiestas)
Spanish towns are famous for their festivals (fiestas), and Guardamar is no exception. There are many fiestas throughout the year, some larger than others. Here we list some of the more popular (and typically the larger) fiestas to look out for:-
On June 21st the Hogueras de San Juan (Festival of St. John) takes place involving many large bonfires and fireworks from atop the town's castle.
The 2nd Sunday in July marks the time of the town's biggest fiesta; the celebration of both the town's patron, Saint James, and the Moors and Christians (Moros y Christianos) festival, which marks the expulsion of the Moors from the region. Being the most important fiesta, it lasts an entire week. Festivities take the shape of parades (in which many locals dress up as either Moors or Christians in fantastic outfits), music, dancing, eating, drinking, and of course lots of loud fireworks.
The best advice we can give for those wishing to plan their holiday/trip at fiesta time is to contact the Guardamar tourist office. Their contact details are as follows: -
