Valderrama Golf The Real Club de Golf Valderrama was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones (though then known as the Sotogrande New Course, followed by Las Aves). It was redesigned in 1984 by a Jaime Ortiz-Patino and Robert Trent Jones partnership, and the name was changed to Valderrama. Since then it has risen in the Golf World rankings to become the no.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position held since 1989. Many competitions have been held here; including the Ryder Cup, Golf World Championships, Volvo Masters, and American Express Championship. It is located in the Sotogrande residential development, at the westernmost end of the Costa del Sol. A par 71, 18 hole offering measuring 6356 metres (at championship length), the course is both severe to the championship player and playable to those of lesser ability. This is largely due to the extensive use and positioning of tees. Valderrama is a strategic challenge in many different ways; it features a total of 80 bunkers, water hazards, and winds need to be considered. Visiting golfers will find Valderrama maintained to the highest of standards; lush tree lined fairways, immaculate elevated greens, and several unique features give this course the recognition it deserves. Valderrama Golf boasts a host of additional amenities. Facilities here include; a magnificent clubhouse and restaurant, golf shop, and a multitude of practice facilities (once described by Nick Faldo to be the best in Europe).
