Santa Pola Fiestas
Fiestas in Santa Pola, Costa Blanca, Spain
Santa Pola Festivals (Fiestas)
Spanish towns are famous for their festivals (fiestas), and Santa Pola is no exception. There are many fiestas throughout the year, some larger than others. Here we list some of the more popular (and typically the larger) fiestas to look out for:-
In June there is a pilgrimage (romeria) to the hermitage of the Virgin of the Rosary on the Cape of Santa Pola.
On July 16th local sailors honour their patroness La Virgen del Carmen. Celebrations are centred around the port area where a stage is erected and a feast held. The evening culminates with the sailing of decorated boats to the Isle of Tabarca, where Santa Pola derived its name (Tabarca used to be known as Isla Santa Pola).
September 1st - 8th sees the town celebrate both their patron saint La Virgen de Loreto and the Moors and Christians (Moros y Christianos), which marks the expulsion of the Moors from the region. This is the town's most important fiesta, lasting an entire week. Festivities take the shape of parades (in which many locals dress up as either Moors or Christians in fantastic outfits), music, dancing, eating, drinking, and of course lots of loud fireworks. This is an event well worth experiencing and all the family can join in. But do be aware, the streets will be buzzing in the centre of town until late into the night.
Precise dates cannot be given for many of the above festivities, due to ever changing dates. The best advice we can give for those wishing to plan their holiday/trip at fiesta time is to contact the Santa Pola tourist office. Their contact details are as follows: -
