San Pedro de Alcantara Tourist / Tourism San Pedro de Alcantara lays 10 kilometers west of glamorous Marbella, and just a few minutes drive from the peace and beauty of the Sierra de Ronda mountain range on the Costa del Sol. Though San Pedro has been around since the 1860's, it was not until the 1970's that tourism really took off. This quickly brought about landscaping drives and increasing efforts made towards town planning. The result is a clean and tidy town with plenty of parks, squares and gardens. Commercial enterprises such as retail outlets, cafes, restaurants, hotels, and golf courses have also become established. Most people visiting the town head for the central plaza, or the seafront. The plaza is in the oldest quarter, featuring its own church and surrounded by a maze of narrow streets lined with many shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants. The beachfront can be accessed via the Avenida del Marques del Duero (an attractive palm fringed street) which connects with the promenade. San Pedro also plays host to its share of historical attractions; its Paleochristian Basilica Church and Necropolis can be found overlooking the sea, while the ancient Roman baths "Las Bovedas" can be found via the beach in the direction of Guadalmina. In more recent times San Pedro has attracted interest from residential tourists. With house prices often considerably cheaper than those of its coastal neighbours Marbella and Puerto Banus; San Pedro is still close enough to sample the high life, but without the price tag or (in the summer months) quite as many crowds.
