Nerja Tourist / Tourism Nerja is a much loved holiday resort located on the eastern section of the Costa del Sol. One of the town's best known and most photographed attractions is the Balcon de Europa, a smart promenade that runs along a rocky promontory. According to many articles, it was named the 'Balcony of Europe' by King Alfonso XII, who visited the town in 1885 after it was struck by an earthquake. However, there is no actual documentary evidence to support this story. What is certain though, is that the views from this promenade towards Nerja's pretty coves are unsurpassed. Close to the Balcon de Europa is the 17th century church of El Salvador, memorable for its fine Mudejar-style ceiling. A short distance outside the town are the famous Nerja Caves, discovered by chance in 1959 by a group of boys searching for bats. Attracting around half a million visitors annually, these caves are the most popular tourist attraction on the Costa del Sol. Highlights include the massive Cataclysm Chamber containing a central column which, at over 30 metres tall, is the largest in the world. Another of the vast chambers has been converted into an auditorium to host the annual Nerja Caves Festival. Nerja Tourist Offices Tel +34 952 521531 Fax +34 952 521493 More Costa del Sol links;
