Nerja Tourist / Tourism The coastal town of Nerja is located 50 kilometres from Malaga, marking the eastern tip of the Costa del Sol. This location ultimately saved the town from the wave of early tourism and high rise development experienced by western towns like Torremolinos. The result is a smaller, and mainly low rise community with much of its character preserved. Development has of course occurred and in recent times Nerja has attracted a lot of interest from residential tourists looking to buy in a more traditional setting. This has led to continuing expansion of the town, and it now has a population of over 12,000. Most of the new construction has been in the form of villa style communities; mostly tasteful and in keeping with what came before. Alongs with tourists come the need for commercial enterprises such as restaurants, bars, shops, and other outlets. These types of businesses have sprung up to meet demand in Nerja, though mainly confined to specific zones (such as around the Balcon de Europa). The old town also caters for tourists loking for a souvenir, but this is by no means oppressive, or out of character with the area.
