Nerja Fiestas Spanish towns and cities are famous for their festivals (fiestas) and Nerja is no exception. There are plenty of fiestas throughout the town calendar, see below for some of the more popular events:-
In mid February Nerja plays host to an annual carnival. Social groups within the town dress up and board decorated floats. The town is bathed in colour, and much music, singing, and dancing ensues. One of the most popular celebrations in Nerja takes place during Easter week. Easter is celebrated in a bigger way in Andalucia than in the rest of the country. Neighbouring towns compete with one another in terms of the size and grandeur of events. Festivities in Nerja take the form of various religious processions through the streets of the old town. Another popular fiesta is the Fiesta de San Juan (feast of St. John) on the 24rd of June. The fiesta originates from pagan tradition, though given Christian sanction, and is essentially a celebration of the midsummer solstice. This partly involves a procession of a collection of large effigies (made by the locals). Festivities are centered around the streets Calle de San Jan, Calle de la Choza and Burriana. Events culminate with the effigies being burnt on huge bonfires erected at Playa Burriana beach, and are accompanied by fireworks. Every town/village in Andalucia province has its own summer feria/fair; Nerja's summer fair dates back to 1804 and is held on the 10th of October. Daytime events take the form of parades. Much tapas is enjoyed, as well as much drinking, singing and dancing. The evenings move towards the Recinto Ferial (public fairground) area on the outskirts of the town, which is bathed in light and colour. As always, events culminate with a grandeus firework display.
Precise dates cannot be given for many of the above festivities due to dates changing on an annual basis. The best advice we can give for those planning their holiday at fiesta time is to contact the Nerja tourist office.
