The capital of a thinly populated province of the same name, the city of Murcia has a population of 358,000 people. Perhaps one of the least visited cities in southern Spain Murcia has a lot to offer the discerning tourist. Often described as one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the country Murcia owes much of its heritage to the Moors (Arabs), who founded it in 825AD; naming the city Mursiya. Re-conquered by native Spaniards in 1243 it went on to prosper; funding much of the splendour seen today, from the magnificent baroque cathedral, to its urban palaces and churches. Murcia is also a university city with large numbers of national and foreign students attending. The student population here does much to add a youthful vibe and Murcia does come alive at night. Do not be put off by this; there really is something for all ages. It is after all customary for Spanish families to go for a walk after their evening meal, perhaps to have an ice cream, or a drink. One of the main attractions here is the diversity and availability of accommodation. There are many hotels to choose from; from low cost options through to high end offerings. To search for hotels click Murcia Hotels; to search for rental accommodation on the Costa Calida click Murcia Rentals. Murcia is an inland city, however as a province it includes the Costa Calida Beaches, which are mainly sandy. Visitors should find the beaches clean and in the main served by good quality chiringuitos (beach front cafes). Those in search of evening entertainment will find that Murcia offers a good range of options. Traditional fiestas (festivals) are still prevalent, and there are a number to choose from, see our Murcia Fiestas document for more information. Murcia Weather is well known for being mild, making it an ideal destination in both summer and winter months. This is mainly due to the fact that the province is sheltered by hills and high mountains, allowing for a kind of micro climate, which in turn limits rainfall. The result is that Murcia enjoys sunshine for in excess of 300 days per year. Murcia Tourist Offices Tel +34 902 101070
