Mojacar Attractions Mojacar is a popular holiday destination on Spain's Costa de Almeria. The town is divided into two separate parts: the 'playa' refers to the modern coastal strip with its many hotels and restaurants; and the 'pueblo' is an old whitewashed village situated inland.  Mojacar Pueblo, which flourished under Moorish rule, is one of Andalucia's best-loved attractions. At the highest point of this picturesque village are the crumbling remains of the castle, from which there are great views of the surrounding area. Below these ruins, close to the Plaza Nueva, is the fortress-like church of Santa Maria that dates from the mid-sixteenth century. Next to the church is a statue, La Mojaquera, of a woman holding a typical Arab headscarf with her teeth.   In 1488 the Catholic monarchs, Fernando and Isabella, met the local Muslim rulers in Mojacar to ask for their surrender. An inscription on the Moorish Fountain (Fuente Mora), situated on the aptly named Calle la Fuente, records this important historic event.  The Puerta de la Almedina, also known as the Puerta de la Ciudad, is the old Moorish entrance into Mojacar.
