Mijas Golf Golf in Mijas and throughout the Costa del Sol is a major industry. This part of Spain boasts perhaps the highest concentration of high quality golf courses in Europe. Mild weather and warm winters are the main reason why the sport took off here; and with increased popularity in the game many visiting golfers (including well known professionals) use the Costa del Sol as their winter training ground. The acclaimed Mijas Golf first opened for business in the 1970's. Today it is one of the busiest and most popular courses on the Costa del Sol. It is made up of 2 courses; Los Lagos (The Lakes) and Los Olivos (The Olive Groves)&ldots; The internationally acclaimed Alhaurin Golf first opened for business in 1993 and is made up of 3 courses; an 18 hole championship course, a 9 hole offering, and an 18 hole children's course. Located in the mountains behind Mijas (6 km away)&ldots; La Cala Golf opened for business in 1991. Today it is one of the most popular courses on the Costa del Sol and the only one to feature three 18 hole courses; the North course, the South course, and more recently the Campo Europa course&ldots; Opening in 1990 Miraflores Golf consists of 18 holes measuring 6294 yards and is a par 72 course. Located in the hills behind Mijas Costa the scenery is breathtaking; with views out across the countryside and out to sea&ldots; La Siesta Golf first opened in 1990. A 9 hole offering the course is located in the hills between Mijas Costa and Calahonda. Overall the course looks good and is well maintained, with views out to sea from the 1st and 9th holes&ldots; Lauro Golf opened in 1992 as an 18 hole parkland course. It has since had another 9 hole course added to it and is often marketed as Lauro 27 Golf. The course is just a few kilometres from Mijas; though Alhaurin el Grande is closer... Santana Golf and Country Club The Santana Golf and Country Club is an 18 hole par 72 offering, measuring just 7000 yards. The surroundings here are second to none as the course is set amongst orange and avocado groves and just a few hundred metres from the sea&ldots; La Noria Golf was inaugurated in December of 2003. A 9 hole par 33 course it is located in the municipality of Mijas, at La Cala de Mijas, though easily commutable from both Fuengirola and Marbella&ldots;
The vast majority of courses do not allow booking more than 7 days in advance (unless booking in large groups), preferring to capitalise on the income created by short term visitors. However due to demand, short term booking is almost always necessary and those turning up on the day expecting to play may find themselves disappointed.
