Mijas Fiestas Spanish towns and cities are famous for their festivals (fiestas), and Mijas is no exception. There are many fiestas throughout its calendar, some larger than others. Here we list some of the more popular fiestas to look out for:-
Easter week is celebrated in a bigger way in Andalucia than in the rest of the country. Neighbouring towns compete with one another in terms of the size and grandeur of events. Festivities in Mijas are well worth visiting. They take the form of various (often moving) religious processions through the town streets. On the 28th of May Mijas holds its International day for People of the World; a fiesta celebrating the joy of tolerance and integration. Currently twenty six nationalities are (officially) represented. Festivities begin at 11.30am with a parade along the town streets, ending upon the Virgin de la Pena square. Here a variety of different stalls are set up offering food and drink native to each represented nation. The food is cheap (typically 1 euro per dish) and worth tasting. Traditional costumes and handicrafts are also on display. There are numerous Flamenco events that take place in Mijas during the months of July and August. In the main these take the form of organised shows, but those wishing to learn some moves will be pleased to here that there are Flamenco dance schools operating here during the summer months. Every town/village in Andalucia province has its own summer feria/fair; Mijas' last a week starting around the 8th of September and is held in honour of the town's patron saint, the Virgen de la Pena. Events take place in the town streets and take the form of much eating, drinking, singing and dancing. There are processions with Spanish horses, and many people dressed up in traditional flamenco style. The evenings involve yet more singing, dancing, eating and drinking; though organised entertainment is laid out both for children and adults. Events culminate with a grandeus firework display.
