Marbella Attractions Marbella first became famous as a destination for jet-setters in the 1950's, when the likes of Gina Lollobrigida, Sophia Loren and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor used to holiday here. The resort has several attractions, including great beaches, a variety of exclusive shops selling designer labels, and a picturesque old town of narrow alleyways. There are some interesting historic sights within Marbella's Casco Antiguo (old quarter), most notably the little chapel of San Juan de Dios, and the Baroque-style church of the Iglesia de la Encarnacion which originally dates from the sixteenth century. In the heart of this Casco Antiguo is the charming square of Plaza de los Naranjos, home to a selection of open-air cafes and restaurants. A 16th century hospital houses the Museo del Grabado Contemporaneo, which contains prints by several great Spanish artists, in particular Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. There is more art on display, this time from Latin America, at the Museo del Ralli. One of Marbella's quirkier attractions is the Museo Bonsai with its impressive collection of the charming little trees. No visit to Marbella would be complete without spending a few hours lazing on the resort's beaches. The best of these - Playa Nagueles and Playa de la Fontanilla - are located to the west of the town centre. More Marbella Links;
