Marbella Marbella is Spain's answer to St. Tropez, and has been a chic and popular destination since the 1950's. As flight routes to Malaga airport have grown more frequent Marbella has attracted more visitors. Here tourists mingle with the rich and famous in a well manicured and decadent town; offering many excellent restaurants, boutiques, attractions, and a very sophisticated nightlife. Despite its popularity Marbella has managed to retain much charm and character. This is best presented in the old quarter of town, set back from the glitz and glamour of the port area. Here you will find such gems as the Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Square); surrounded by traditional white washed houses amongst a maze of narrow streets and alleys. The old town is also one of the better places to shop, with a good selection of outlets selling local wares, alongside the designer label offerings that Marbella has become synonymous with. In recent times the town further sharpened its image thanks to a considerable investment by former mayor Jesus Gil; resulting in a massive landscaping drive. The results of this can be seen all around in examples such as the La Alameda Park; where you can book a horse and carriage tour or simply walk on towards the sea along the Avenida del Mar promenade. This is arguably one of the best promenades on the Costa, flanked by classy restaurants, bars and retail outlets. The seafront in Marbella is (as you would expect) very well maintained. There are a few beaches worth mentioning (see Marbella Beaches page), all are well equipped, clean and feature life guard stations. In more recent times Marbella has attracted much interest from residential tourists. For many people looking to purchase their dream home in the sun Marbella was the preferred option. As a result prices have rocketed; making Marbella and its neighbour Puerto Banus the most expensive spots on the Costa. Now home to many of Europe's rich and famous, Marbella boasts some of the most beautiful villas around. Marbella is surrounded by high quality golf courses; in fact the Costa del Sol boasts perhaps the highest concentration of high quality golf courses in Europe, with many golfing professionals using the Costa as their winter training ground. Finally its mild weather makes it an ideal destination for holiday makers all year round. The coastline in this part of Spain is sheltered by hills and high mountains; thus limiting rainfall, and as a result the surrounding areas enjoy sunshine for in excess of 320 days per year.
