Javea Festivals (Fiestas) The Spanish are famous for their festivals (fiestas), and the town of Javea has its fair share. There are many fiestas throughout the year, some larger than others. Most are a colourful and vibrant affair, lasting well into the evening and night; some for quite a few days. Many of the festivals in Javea correspond to particular periods in the town's history. Here we list some of the more popular (and typically the larger) fiestas to look out for:- Seen by many as the principle fiesta of the town, between June 15th and 21st the Hogueras de San Juan (Bonfires of St. John) take place. The town is bathed in light and colour to welcome in the summer. Many bonfires and fireworks light up the nights together with feasting and dancing into the early hours. The 14th and 18th July the people of Javea celebrate the Moros y Christianos (Muslims and Christians) fiesta. One of the town's largest festivals the Muslims and Christians fiesta commemorates the battles between the Moors and the Christians in Javea. Many locals celebrate the festivity by way of donning elaborate costumes and parading through the town streets. Mock battles also take place using real gunpowder around the port area. As usual there is plenty of food and drink to be had, and fireworks crown the event. The 1st-8th September celebrates the town's patron saint La Virgen de Loreto. Events include bull running around the port area, parades, colourful costume, music, dancing, and of course a grand firework display.  The best advice we can give for those wishing to plan their holiday/trip at fiesta time is to contact the Javea tourist office.
