Fuengirola Attractions Fuengirola is a family-oriented holiday resort situated on the Costa del Sol. The town is probably best known for its five miles (8km) of sandy beaches. A long promenade, lined with hotels, bars and restaurants, runs along the seafront. At the western end of the resort, on a small hill by the Fuengirola River, are the remains of Sohail Castle. The current structure dates from the 18th century, although there were earlier Roman and Moorish fortifications on this site. In 1810, during the Peninsular Wars, a British task force under the leadership of General Blayney landed at the castle. Blayney and his men advanced on neighbouring Mijas, but the General was forced back by a smaller band of Polish troops and he eventually had to surrender. The defeat remains one of the British Army's more embarrassing episodes. It's a small climb up to the castle, but it's worth the effort for the magnificent views of Fuengirola from the ramparts. Fuengirola Zoo, which is located near the town centre, is home to various species from the tropical rainforest, including monkeys, gibbons and Sumatran tigers. During the hot summer months the zoo is open until late at night so that visitors can enjoy the more nocturnally-active animals. More Fuengirola places you might wish to visit;
