Fuengirola Tourist / Tourism Fuengirola has been popular since the 60's; it was caught up in the tourist rush, quickly changing from a sleepy fishing village into a bustling cosmopolitan community. Though places such as Torremolinos or Marbella may be more familiar to many people, Fuengirola is actually the more popular destination. Today the municipality of Fuengirola is the most densely populated in Malaga province. Like its coastal neighbour Benalmadena; Fuengirola's early popularity came as a result of Torremolinos (the pioneer of the tourist trade in Spain) becoming less fashionable. Fuengirola did well out of this as the downturn in Torremolinos led to a surge in popularity for itself and Benalmadena. In more recent times it is residential tourism that has attracted the most interest. Many of those looking to purchase their dream home in the sun found Fuengirola to be the best option. There are several reasons for this; its closeness to Malaga Airport, relative cheapness in comparison with other resorts such as Marbella/Puerto Banus, and the sheer quantity of things to see and do in its immediate vicinity. Fuengirola is home to a Zoo (found west of the town), a bullring, and the Costa del Sol's only Hippodrome (classical horse racing track). There are also a host of water parks and themed parks within short driving distance of the town. Also worth a look are the (quieter) Los Boliches and Torreblanca districts. They can be reached via the attractive Paseo Maritimo seafront promenade. Los Boliches is a charming place, with narrow winding streets and a feeling of antiquity. It used to be a separate town and therefore has its own community of shops, beaches and much more. More importantly it is home to the remains of a Roman villa which is open to the public. Shopping is great here; with an excellent selection of supermarkets and competitively priced shops on offer. In addition Tuesdays host one of the Costa's largest street markets at the Recinto Ferial (public fairground) area. You can even take a horse and carriage ride at the entrance. Fuengirola is also well known for its five miles of sandy beaches, easy access to perhaps the highest concentration of high quality golf courses in Europe, and the continents mildest climate. All this making Fuengirola an excellent place to stay, whether to relax, or to use as a base from which to explore.
