Fuengirola Fuengirola has been popular since the 60's, amongst foreign nationals and Spaniards alike. As with many towns along these shores it was caught up in the tourist rush, changing from a sleepy fishing village into a bustling cosmopolitan community. Though places such as Torremolinos or Marbella may be more familiar to many people, Fuengirola is the more popular destination. Today the municipality of Fuengirola is the most densely populated in Malaga province. Like its coastal neighbour Benalmadena; Fuengirola's early popularity came as a result of Torremolinos (the pioneer of the tourist trade in Spain) becoming less fashionable. People were looking for something new and the small fishing town of Fuengirola with its quaint Los Boliches quarter proved to be the perfect destination. Considerable growth followed, though mainly in the form of large hotel complexes and associated businesses. In more recent times it is residential tourism that has attracted the most interest. For many of those looking to purchase their dream home in the sun Fuengirola was the only option. There are several reasons for this; its closeness to Malaga Airport, relative cheapness in comparison with other resorts such as Marbella/Puerto Banus, and the sheer quantity of things to see and do in its immediate vicinity. This increase in resident population has given Fuengirola an advantage over its neighbours; it now has an excellent selection of supermarkets and competitively priced shops, as opposed to the typical gift shop strip selling t-shirts and imported shells. On Tuesdays one of the Costa's largest street markets takes place at the Recinto Ferial (public fairground) area. You can even take a horse and carriage ride at the entrance. Aside from the standard entertainment types there are a few sights to take in here. A walk along the Paseo Maritimo would be good start, as this attractive seafront promenade leads to the quieter Los Boliches and Torreblanca districts. Los Boliches used to be a separate town and therefore has its own community of shops, beaches and much more. The remains of a Roman villa are open to the public here. Alternatively Fuengirola is home to a Zoo (found west of the town), a bullring, and the Costa del Sol's only Hippodrome (classical horse racing track). Fuengirola is also well known for its five miles of sandy beaches and sweeping coastline. It is within reach of perhaps the highest concentration of high quality golf courses in Europe; as many golfing professionals use the Costa del Sol as their winter training ground. Finally its mild weather makes it an ideal destination for holiday makers all year round. The coastline in this part of Spain is sheltered by hills and high mountains; thus limiting rainfall, and as a result the surrounding areas enjoy sunshine for in excess of 320 days per year.
