Cartagena Tourist Attractions Cartagena is an important naval port on the Costa Calida in Spain. Due to its strategic location on the Mediterranean coast, the city has had a long and varied history. Consequently, Cartagena has numerous attractions for visitors. A good place to start your tour of the city is at the Archaeology Museum, which houses a range of artefacts dating from the Moorish, Visigothic, Roman and Carthaginian periods. For an insight into Cartagena's extensive maritime history, there are a couple of museums: the Museum of Maritime Archaeology and the Naval Museum. The latter is housed within an impressive Modernista building. It contains several items related to the locally born inventor Isaac Peral, who created an early submarine. Peral's original submarine is located by the marina. The Museum of Maritime Archaeology houses exhibits recovered from the seabed, including a section of an ancient Roman ship. A flight of steps leads up from the cathedral to the Castillo de la Concepcion. This 11th century castle has now been converted into a public park, from which there are fine views of Cartagena's harbour. Finally, we should not forget the recently uncovered remains of a Roman theatre built into the hillside, now one of the city's major landmarks.
