Cartagena Fiestas Spanish towns are famous for their festivals (fiestas), and Cartagena is no exception. There are a plethora of events throughout the year, some larger than others. Here we list some of the most popular, and typically the larger fiestas to look out for:- On July 16th local sailors honour their patroness La Virgen del Carmen. Celebrations are centred around the port area where a stage is erected and a feast held. The evening culminates with the launching of decorated boats. On August 25th there is a pilgrimage (romeria) to the nearby hermitage of San Gines de la Jara. By far the largest fiesta in Cartagena is that of the Carthagineses y Romanos (Carthaginians and Romans), which takes place during the month of September. Commemorating the famous events of the 2nd Punic war; Hannibal and his elephants meet the Roman legions in the form of street parades, music, fireworks and dancing last several days. Nowhere in Spain is this event commemorated with such vigour and enthusiasm; after all Cartagena played an important part in these historic events. Precise dates cannot be given for many of the above festivities due to ever changing dates.
