Calpe History Calpe's history is one of a strategic point and an ancient fishing village. Many peoples have lived here throughout history; ancient Iberian hill tribes, Romans, Christians and Moors. All undertook fishing activities here and the Romans even built a salt works at the base of the Penon de Ifach rock, and undertook the sale/export of salted fish to travellers and nearby provinces. Christians and Moors later lived together in relative peace for a time. However evidence has been found of measures taken to fortify the town scourged between the 14th and 17th centuries by Barbary pirates. The remains of this Moorish castle can be found to this day overlooking the Mascarat ravine. In fact many reminders of past times still exist in the old quarter, from murals, to monuments and museums. Calpe has done well to conserve much if its inherited historical buildings and monuments, under the constant pressure of advancement and residential tourism. The former town walls, old church and monuments are the last example of Mudejar-Gothic architecture in the Valencian region. Roman presence has also been preserved by way of an ancient fish factory and villa.
