Benalmadena With a resident population of around 30,000 inhabitants Benalmadena is conveniently located just 19kms from Malaga airport in the province of Andalucia. Like many coastal towns in Spain, Benalmadena is collection of zones that have merged together as the population has increased; the (inland) old town, its port/marina, and the residential-commercial zone that join the two together. Benalmadena Pueblo (the older part of town) sits perched on the mountainside. Here you will find old typical whitewashed Andalucian houses and narrow, steep winding streets. A magnificent fairytale style castle built in honour of Columbus (Castillo de Colomares) can also be found here overlooking the surrounding territory; and though it is hard to see what function it would have had, its intricate architecture makes it well worth a visit. The village is also home to some small museums and a collection of art and crafts shops. The Arroyo de la Miel district of Benalmadena houses the majority of the populace. It is made up of residential zones and commercial/retail outlets. Also to be found here is a sports complex, a bi-lingual library, and the popular Tivoli World theme park. Benalmadena Costa is the area most visited by tourists. This part of town is closest to Torremolinos. It boasts over 9 kilometers of sandy beaches, and a world class marina with over 1000 berths. Also to be found here are 200,000m² gardens looking out to the Mediterranean, a casino and highly rated golf course. On the nearby Feria ground a market is held in the evenings. A wide collection of hotels can be found here, in addition to a multitude of rental apartments and villas. One of the most touted facts about Benalmadena is its mild weather, making it an ideal destination for holiday makers throughout summer and winter months. The coastline in this part of Spain is sheltered by hills and high mountains; this in turn limits rainfall, and as a result the city and surrounding areas enjoy sunshine for in excess of 320 days per year. At its hottest during the summer months, temperatures rarely fall below 30°C (86°F). Whereas the typically very mild winters, boast daily highs of around 20°C (64°F).
