Altea Tourism Despite its proximity to one of Europe's largest tourist spots (Benidorm), the white washed town of Altea has managed to remain untouched by mass tourism. Visitors to the town tend to be a mixture between owners of holiday homes in the area, and those renting privately owned apartments and villas. Of course, some visitors will stay in hotels and other accommodation types, and there is a certain amount of choice present. Please see our "Altea Hotels" document for more information/online booking. With Altea's narrow cobbled streets and stepped pathways it is easy to understand why it became a favourite haunt for artists, musicians and writers in the 60's. Today is retains much of the old charm, with a mixture of well preserved Moorish and Mediterranean architecture, and palm fringed seafront promenade. The town is split between old and new quarters. The picture postcard old quarter (Vellaguarda quarter) sits on top a hill with excellent views of the mountains and Altea bay. The new quarter is down by the seafront and is the site for the majority of recent development, restaurants and other amenities. Whether you are looking for beautiful beaches, sporting activities, historical artefacts, a daytrip, or something to do in the evening there really is something in Altea for all ages. Altea has a 6 kilometre seafront, made up of cliffs alternating with shingle bathing areas. The Club de Golf Don Cayo (Don Cayo Golf Club) first opened its doors in 1974 as part of the "El Aramo" residential development. Situated at the foot of the Sierra Bernia mountain range it is located within the municipality of Altea. Those seeking cheap flights to Altea will be please to know, flying to the south of Spain has never been easier, or cheaper. The area around Altea has been inhabited for many thousands of years, with inhabitants such as Iberian tribes, Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs to name but a few.
