Almeria Attractions Almeria is a thriving port in eastern Andalucia. The city's biggest tourist attraction is the Alcazaba, a huge Moorish fortress with walls nearly a mile long. Built by Abd al Rahman III during the tenth century, this hilltop citadel consists of three main parts: the palace of the Muslim rulers, a rose garden, and a castle added by the Christians. There are some fantastic views of the city from the large towers within this newer part of the complex. Almeria's cathedral, which dates from the sixteenth century, was built with robust fortifications to help protect it from attack by Moors and pirates. Inside are some fine paintings, including the Immaculate Concepcion by the Spanish artist, Murillo. The Casa de los Puche, constructed in the eighteenth century and the oldest house in Almeria, is located near the cathedral. There are several fine churches within the city's maze of narrow streets, including the Iglesia San Juan, converted from a mosque, and the sixteenth-century Iglesia de Santiago, designed by Juan de Orea. The Museo Arqueologico is the pick of Almeria's museums. It is home to a collection of finds from the prehistoric site at Los Millares, located around 12 miles northwest of the city.
