Alicante Tourism Alicante Promenade (Explanada de Espana) Alicante's promenade the "Explanada de Espana" is one the most appealing features of the city. With palm trees and carefully tended flower beds, the romantic setting is disturbed only by the occasional café. Alicantes cuisine is (as one might expect) very Mediterranean, with great importance given to the selection and use of fresh produce. Eating Out in Alicante Eating out is a favourite pastime here (much more so than in the UK), and as a result Alicante is literally brimming with affordable options. Many restaurants prefer to serve traditional Spanish foods, but a wide range of international cuisine is also available. Click Alicante Eating Out Alicante Castle - Castillo de Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara Castle) Perhaps the most prominent symbol of Alicante is its Castle which looks out over the city and surrounding land from the summit of mount Benacantil, 166m above the sea. Archaeological findings seem to indicate its site was originally that of an Iberian hill fort, although the castle itself dates from the sixteenth century. The building itself is well preserved with draw bridges, stone passages, hidden tunnels and dungeons. In addition a beautiful garden has been created in the grounds, with many works from Spanish master sculptors featuring. Be sure to pay a visit to the "Museo de les Fogueres" museum which features many of the best effigies captured from the flames of the "Las Hogueras de San Juan" festival (see Alicante - Festivals document for more info). Ascent can either be made by car, or lift going up from Postiguet beach. Iglesia de Santa Maria (Church of St. Mary) Dating back to the 16th century this church was built on the site of an ancient Arab mosque. The interior is gothic in style with a baroque altar and doorway. Marina Alicante (Alicante Marina) Please refer to Alicante Marina for further information. Alicante Cathedral - Concatedral de Nicolas de Bari (Cathedral of St. Nicholas of Bari) Completed in 1662 this renaissance style building is widely considered one of the best examples of Spanish baroque architecture. Worth noting is the cloister, adorned with grilles and wooden doors. Alicante Museum - Museo Casa de la Asegurada (Museum "Casa de la Asegurada") Originally constructed in the 17th century the building itself has had a variety of uses over the years, ranging from municipal granary, artillery storehouse, prison, school of commerce and a provisional city hall. Today it is home to an impressive collection of 20th century art, much of which was donated to the city by the artist "Eusebio Sempere" in 1976. The museum houses works by Gris, Miro, Picasso and Dali, as well as works by lesser know Spanish painters such as Chillida, Mompo and Zobel. Palacio Gravina (Gravina Palace) Built in the 18th century this building is now home to the provincial archives. At various stages throughout the year doors are opened for a variety of exhibitions and cultural activities. Isla de Tabarca (Island of Tabarca) The Island of Tabarca is just 11 nautical miles from Alicante and reached by ferry from Alicante's marina. At one point in history this tiny island was a base for pirates and corsairs. Today you will find a medieval fort, a pleasant beach and some nice seafood restaurants. An excursion here makes the perfect day trip, with the main attraction being snorkelling amongst the outlaying marine reserves. In addition a glass bottomed boat and submarine are in operation for those wishing to see the depths from an altogether drier standpoint. Tabarca Island Alicante Lawn Bowling Clubs Lawn Bowling (Bowls) is becoming ever more popular in Spain. Many clubs and associations now exist, most of these located in areas with an international presence. Alicante Bowls Alicantes Salt Water Lagoons/Lakes Alicante province is home to a number of salt water lakes/lagoons. Many of these are host to wildlife, considered to be nature reserves and therefore protected. Others are worked for their salt deposits, exported for many uses all over the world, even as far as New York (to salt the roads). Alicante Lagoons Alicante Attractions Alicante is a marvellous city with many things to see and do, but it is also a province. The province of Alicante reaches as far North (coastally) as Denia and as far south as San Pedro del Pinatar, and there are a mountain of attractions within its borders.
